ABOUT US
Mintaro wines was established in 1984 by the wine producer, Peter Houldsworth.
Located in the historic town of Mintaro, the vineyards were originally planted in 1962 and consistently produce award winning wines.
We also have three reserve labels. The first is Belles Femmes Shiraz. The second is Leckie Window Cabernet Sauvignon. The final reserve is the Flying Doctor, a Shiraz. These three series come in a beautifully presented box set of 6 bottles each with its own individual label. These make an ideal gift for those people who are a little hard to buy for.
The First Reserve Shiraz is called “Belles Femmes” and features six grand 19th century paintings of beautiful women.
The Second Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is called the “Leckie Window” and features six stunning Greek Mythological stained glass and leadlight images from a window designed and created by a prominent Australian artist in 1935. The Flying Doctor Reserve can be purchased with the book "Just What the Doctor Ordered" A guide to the Australian idiom by renowned Broken Hill artist, Howard William Steer and Peter J Nicholson. You couldn't find a better Aussie gift.
The Story of Jack Hector
Born in Mintaro in 1899, John Riddick Hector was the eldest of the Frederick Anton and Francis Hector’s six children. His grandparents were Irish pioneers in the district.
Jack Attended the Mintaro Primary School and at the tender age of fourteen, decided to “hump his bluey” to Quorn. Here he learnt the trade of a saddler and excelled in this almost forgotten art. Whilst in Quorn he met Jessie Beer, who later became his wife.
In 1925, Jack and Jessie returned to Mintaro and moved into a house on the site where the Mintaro Cellers would later be built.
Jack commenced work at the Mintaro Slate Quarries, remaining there until retirement. He Proved to be a Master at Working with Slate. During the Second the world war, Jack served his country by making saddles and brides with the Light Horse Regiment. He attained the rank of Sergeant.
In a happy lifetime, Jack and Jessie had seven daughters and four generations of descendants now live throughout Australia. Jack, like his Irish forbears always appreciated a fine Tawny.
